After the coup d’etat of 18 Brumaire in which Napoleon gained control of the French govenrment as First Consul (another Republican throw-back to ancient Rome.), Napoleon had the 5 francs coin re-designed with his own bust on the obverse. This was certainly an ominous sign for any supporter of the French Republic.
