After the exectuion of Louis and the abolition of the monarchy, the revolution passed through increasingly radical and bloody stages. This design of this coin was produced during the period of the Directory as it became clear that something was needed to control the excesses of the revolution. The image on the obverse shows Hercules flanked by Liberty and Equality under the legend ‘Union et Force,’ clearly expressing the idea that order and control were needed if France were to survive.
